Episode 01: Reclaiming my Narrative
Welcome to Healing In Harmony! This podcast is a safe space for me to share my journey with you and hopefully take a journey with you through your own healing. I will be showcasing different healing modalities from Ayurveda to plant medicine and the ways in which we can harness ancient indigenous knowledge and wisdom to heal ourselves and our communities. On the first episode I will be sharing with you my journey with my mental and physical health that led me into into the type of work I do today as a holistic practitioner. I am a storyteller and educator. Born and raised in Kenya, my Maasai heritage plays a massive role in all the different projects that I am a part of now. My work is centred on resistance, identity and wellbeing. I am passionate about elevating the voices of indigenous and marginalised communities. As an anthropology graduate, I have worked in education and mental health research and I currently convene an Anthropology and Sociology course at the School Of PanAfrican Thought. My identity has always been in conflict; growing up with a mixed heritage, I came to understand later in life that if you come from a Black woman, you are a Black woman. Being racialised in different countries where I've lived and being exposed to social and institutional racism has impacted the type of work I do today. I used poetry to express myself in a way that I felt I could escape judgement.
As an activist and artist, I am constantly looking for new ways to challenge myself. But the biggest challenge in my life was becoming a wife and a mum. I chose motherhood to be my most radical transformation and came to learn that my greatest power is love, and the best way to tend to myself is through radical healing. I hope that in the stories that I tell through my poetry and the space I facilitate as a holistic practitioner, more women in the margins can find the courage to rise up and reclaim their narratives and power, and in turn transform their power into tools to help elevate other women.
